Affresh® washing machine cleaner contains two main ingredients you are likely already familiar with:

• Sodium percarbonate: This is commonly known as “oxygen-based bleach” or “oxygen bleach.” It doesn’t contain any chlorine. When sodium percarbonate comes in contact with water, it releases hydrogen peroxide, which can help remove grime and odour-causing residues. When the reaction is complete, you’re left with oxygen, water and soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate.

• Sodium carbonate: Commonly known as washing soda or soda ash, is used in laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents, all-purpose cleaners, sanitizing sprays and in soap and glass making. Soda ash cuts through grease and softens water. You’ll find sodium carbonate on the labels of many green cleaning products.

To help maintain the tablet's solid form, the tablets contain polyethylene glycol, a natural compound that helps keep the tablet together. It also allows the tablet to foam and dissolve slowly when it comes into contact with water. Polyethylene glycol is used in many laundry detergents, shampoos, cosmetics and even in pharmaceuticals.

In order to keep the tablets from breaking down in their package, affresh®washing machine cleaner tablets contain the food additive glucono-delta-lactone. Sodium acetate also helps bind the tablets together. You want to make sure that they start working once they are in contact with water in your washing machine! Affresh® tablets contain time-release ingredients for an extended cleaning and the tablet form ensures the ingredients are dosed at the appropriate portion of the clean wash cycle.
